The 24-Hour Cancellation Rule
United Airlines follows the U.S. Department of Transportation's 24-hour cancellation rule. If you cancel your flight within 24 hours of booking and your departure is at least 7 days away, you receive a full refund — no questions asked, no fees, no matter what fare class you booked.
This is the most important rule to know. If you booked your ticket today and have any doubt about your travel plans, cancel within 24 hours to preserve your full refund eligibility.
United Airlines Cancellation Policy by Fare Type
Non-Refundable Tickets (Main Cabin, Economy Plus)
Most United tickets sold are non-refundable. Since 2020, United eliminated cancellation fees on non-refundable tickets for domestic and most international routes. When you cancel:
- You will not receive cash back
- You will receive a FutureFlightCredit for the full value of your ticket
- The credit is valid for 12 months from the original ticket issue date
- Credits are non-transferable — they can only be used by the original ticketed passenger
Refundable Tickets
If you purchased a refundable fare (typically labeled "Refundable" at checkout or booked in premium fare buckets), cancelling at any time before departure entitles you to a full cash refund to your original payment method. Refundable tickets cost more upfront but offer maximum flexibility.
Basic Economy Tickets
Basic Economy is United's most restrictive fare. After the 24-hour cancellation window closes, Basic Economy tickets are completely non-refundable and non-changeable. You cannot:
- Cancel for a refund or credit
- Change the date, time, or destination
- Standby for a different flight
The only exception: if United cancels or significantly delays your Basic Economy flight, you are entitled to a full refund regardless of fare rules.
Award Tickets (MileagePlus)
Award tickets cancelled more than 30 days before departure are redeposited to your MileagePlus account with no fee. Cancellations within 30 days may incur a redeposit fee unless you hold Premier status. Taxes and fees paid are refunded regardless.

How to Cancel a United Airlines Flight
There are three ways to cancel. The fastest is calling a live agent.
Option 1: Call a Live Agent (Fastest)
Call +1 (800) 903-1468— available 24/7 with no hold times. A live agent will verify your booking, confirm your refund or credit eligibility, and process the cancellation immediately. You'll receive a cancellation confirmation by email within minutes.
Option 2: United.com or App
- Go to united.com and click "My Trips"
- Enter your last name and confirmation number
- Select the flight and click "Cancel Flight"
- Confirm the cancellation — a FutureFlightCredit will be issued
Option 3: Airport Ticket Counter
You can cancel at any United ticket counter. This is the slowest option and not recommended unless you are at the airport already.
How to Use a United FutureFlightCredit
FutureFlightCredits are applied at checkout on united.com. When booking a new flight:
- Select your new flights on united.com
- On the payment page, enter your original confirmation number under "Apply Travel Credits"
- The credit amount is deducted from your total
- If the new fare is higher, pay the difference by credit card
- If the new fare is lower, United keeps the difference (no cash back on the difference)
Tip: credits expire 12 months from the original ticket issue date, not from when you cancelled. Make sure to use it in time.
United Airlines Refund Timeline
- Credit card refunds: 7 business days after United processes
- Debit card / bank account: up to 20 business days
- FutureFlightCredit: issued within 24 hours of cancellation
- Cash / check purchases: up to 20 business days
Special Circumstances
United Cancels or Significantly Delays Your Flight
If United cancels your flight or delays it by more than 3 hours domestically (or 6 hours internationally), you are entitled to a full cash refund regardless of fare type. This includes Basic Economy tickets. You do not have to accept a rebooking or FutureFlightCredit.
Medical Emergencies and Bereavement
United considers fee waivers for documented medical emergencies and bereavement on a case-by-case basis. Call our team at +1 (800) 903-1468 — our agents have experience navigating these situations and can submit waiver requests on your behalf.
Travel Waivers (Weather Events, Disasters)
When major weather events or natural disasters disrupt travel, United issues Travel Waivers that allow free rebooking or cancellation with full refund. Check united.com/travelalerts for active waivers — or call us and we'll handle it.
